Labor Day Celebrations

"Labor Day differs in every essential from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
Yes that is what Labor Day stands for. True, things have changed these days with Labor Day being celebrated with the civic events usually associated with national holidays in America. But behind all the usual fun and fiesta of a national holiday the Day has a unique significance.
Traditionally parades, and speeches by labor leaders and political figures, mark Labor Day celebrations. The spirit is to pay a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the power and prosperity of America.

A nationwide holiday:
The form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday -- a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday.
Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
The character of the Labor Day celebration has undergone a change in recent years, especially in large industrial centers where mass displays and huge parades have proved a problem. This change, however, is more a shift in emphasis and medium of expression.
This being But real the spirit remains the same. Labor Day addresses by leading union officials, industrialists, educators, clerics and government officials are given wide coverage in newspapers, radio and television.

 

 

 

History of Labor Day

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the prosperity and well-being of our country.
It was hard times in the days of depression that hit the country in the 1880s. It led to widespread wage cuts and unemployment in the traditional pattern of the economic cycle. This was when the Knights of Labor came into being. It was their initiative that Labor Day turned out to be a civic event with parades and meetings.

The First Labor Day :
Contrary to the present practice the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, l883.
However, it was in l884 when the first Monday in September came to be selected as the holiday, as originally proposed. The Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in l885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

The founder :
There is a difference of opinion regarding the original founder of the day. Two views, both backed by documentary evidence, are prevalent.
Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, was the first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold."
But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
Irrespective of the dispute over the name of the initiator it is clear that the Labor Day proposal was initiated in the United States by the Knights of Labor. Accordingly a committee was formed to plan a demonstration and picnic. In 1882 the Knights of Labor held a large parade in New York City. In 1884 the group held a parade on the first Monday of September and passed a resolution to hold all future parades on that day and to designate the day as Labor Day.
However the state recognition of the day was yet to come.

The recognition :
Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From them developed the movement to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 2l, l887. During the year four more states -- Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York -- created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
National Labor Day was born off the labor movement during the late 19th century. The Day is a milestone in the history of American labor movement.

Labor Day, der Tag der Arbeit, wird immer am ersten Montag im September begangen und ist schon seit 1894 ein Nationalfeiertag. Er geht zurück auf die Kampagne einer frühen Arbeiterbewegung, der Knights of Labor, und wurde in einigen Gegenden sogar schon vor 1894 als Feiertag begangen. Labor Day wird zu Ehren der arbeitenden Bevölkerung gefeiert, und in vielen Städten finden Umzüge von Mitgliedern der Gewerkschaften statt.

Für die meisten Amerikaner bedeutet Labor Day auch das Ende der Sommermonate, und Strände und Ausflugsziele sind oft überfüllt mit Menschen, die das letzte lange Sommerwochenende geniessen. Für die meisten Schüler bedeutet Labor Day das Ende der Ferien und den Beginn des neuen Schuljahres.

Der Herbst beginnt am Labor Day Wochenende

In den Vereinigten Staaten beginnt der Herbst traditionsgemäß mit dem "Labor Day" (Tag der Arbeit) Feiertag, Anfang September und endet mit dem "Thanksgiving Day" (Danksagungstag) Feiertag, Ende November.

Labor Day bedeutet das Ende des Sommers und der, für die meisten Kinder 3 Monate dauernden, Schulferien. In den Nordstaaten schließen die Freibäder sofort nach den Labor Day Wochenende und die meisten sommerlichen Sportaktivitäten nehmen ein Ende. Dieser Feiertag wird immer an einem Montag begangen und die Arbeiter haben ein verlängertes Wochenende. Dieses wird oft für letzte Miniferien für die Familie, vor dem Schulbeginn, genutzt. Picknicks und Grillfeste im Freien sind eine der beliebtesten Beschäftigungen an diesem Tag.

Die Herbstjahreszeit kann im größten Teil der Vereinigten Staaten wirklich angenehm sein. In den Nordstaaten bringt sie üblicherweise warme, sonnige Tage mit frischen Nächten. Das Laub der Wälder nimmt Herbstfarben an und schafft ein farbenprächtiges Schauspiel während einigen kurzen Wochen. Im Süden nimmt die erdrückende Hitze ein Ende und die Temperatur wird angenehmer. Entlang dem Südteil der Atlantikküste und um den Golf von Mexiko kann der Herbst gefährliche Stürme bringen, welche "Hurricanes" (Orkane) benannt sind.

Die Baseball Saison geht zu Ende und die professionellen Baseball Mannschaften beginnen ihre Ausscheidungsspiele hinsichtlich der "World Series". Die Saison des amerikanische Football beginnt. Jedes Wochenende finden überall in den Vereinigten Staaten Spiele Hochschul- und Universitätsmannschaften statt. An den Sonntag Nachmittagen werden überall im Land die Fernseher auf die professionellen Spiele der National Football League eingestellt

Halloween Kürbisse

Halloween ist einer der Lieblingsfeiertage der Kinder

Am 31. Oktober ist Halloween. Im ganzen Land verkleiden sich die Kinder und gehen zu sämtlichen Häusern ihrer Nachbarschaft um Süßigkeiten und Zuckerwaren zu erbetteln. Die Vorgärten vieler Häuser sind mit Hexen, Gespenstern, Skeletten und großen, aus Kürbissen geschnitzten und von innen beleuchteten Gesichtern, "Jack-o-lanterns" genannt, geschmückt. An den Tagen vor Halloween organisiert jede Stadt und jedes Dorf einen Umzug mit verkleideten Kindern und auch einigen Erwachsenen die durch die Straßen ziehen. Preise werden an die beste Verkleidung vergeben. Die berühmtesten Umzüge finden in San Francisco und New York statt, wo die schwulen Einwohner in unglaublich ausgefallenen Kostümen herumziehen. Der 30. Oktober ist als die Nacht des Teufels bekannt. In dieser Nacht können die Leute, die nicht nett zu den Kindern der Nachbarschaft waren, die Gebüsche ihrer Vorgärten mit Klopapier behängt oder ihre Fenster mit Seife beschmiert, auffinden.

Thanksgiving ist der Tag der Familienfeier

Die Herbstzeit nimmt mit dem Feiertagswochenende von Thanksgiving Day (Danksagungstag oder Erntedankfest), welches auf den dritten Donnerstag des Monats November fällt, ein Ende. Dieses Fest ist ein Augenblick wo die Familien für ein großes Festessen zusammen kommen. Gebratenes Truthahn mit Preiselbeerkompott, Süßkartoffeln und Kürbiskuchen (Pumpkin pie) sind die traditionellen Gerichte, welche am Thanksgiving Tag serviert werden. Der Samstag nach Thanksgiving ist der erste Tag der neuen Einkaufssaison für Weihnachten. Das Großkaufhaus Macy's organisiert dann eine enorme Parade in New York und die Geschäfte im ganzen Land bieten die ersten großen Rabattverkäufe der neuen Saison. Dies ist immer einer der wichtigsten Einkaufstage des Jahres, wenn die Winterjahreszeit beginnt.
