Naturalization receipts in February 2003 decreased 39 percent while approvals/oaths were up 10 percent and denials were down 40 percent when compared to February 2002. For the first five months of fiscal YEAR 2005, 166,968 applicants for naturalization took the oath of citizenship, a decrease of 9 percent compared to the same period in fiscal year 2002.

• The number of pending cases decreased 15 percent compared to one year ago. Pending cases have decreased for the months of April 2002 through September 2002, but have increased slightly since.

   

   

• February 2002 naturalization approvals/oaths increased by 3,051 compared to January 2002. The same comparison for February 2003 showed an increase of 24,978.

   

   

• The decrease in Naturalization activity is largely attributed to a shift in personnel to handle the NSEERS program.
